CIGA is here to assist in your recovery

CIGA picks up where your liquidated insurance company left off. Upon receiving your claim, CIGA will work with you and determine the benefits for which you qualify. In the early days and weeks after the liquidation of your insurance company, CIGA may not yet have received your claim information from the court appointed liquidator, but rest assured we are here for you. Please call us at 818-844-4300 and our Initial Response Team will take down your information for when we get your claim file from the liquidator.

CIGA Coverage Limits

Qualifying claims for damage to, or loss of, a dwelling structure under a policy of residential property insurance are handled under 4 potential claim types.

  • Dwelling (Coverage A): Paid at replacement cost up to one million dollars ($1,000,000) or the policy limit, whichever is less)
  • Other Structures (Coverage B): Paid at Actual Cash Value up to $500,000 or the policy limits, whichever is less. (Not attached to the main home such as fences/sheds, etc.)
  • Personal Property (Coverage C): Paid at Actual Cash Value   up to $500,000 or the policy limits, whichever is less. (Personal belongings or everything that goes into a moving van)
  • Loss of Use / Additional Living Expense (Coverage D): Paid at Actual Cash Value up to $500,000 or the policy limits, whichever is less (living expenses when the home becomes uninhabitable)

All other claims, including automobile and personal injury claims, are paid at full value up to $500,000 or the policy limit, whichever is less.

Resources to assist in your recovery

We can't do it alone. There are others ready to assist in the recovery.

We understand that our ability to assist in your recovery is limited to resolving your insurance claim. Your recovery process may include needs beyond that which CIGA can provide assistance with.  We have created a Disaster Resources page with information on a variety of local, state and federal resources that may be of assistance in your recovery needs.

If you have identified other resources that may be of benefit to others, let us know.

Questions? We've Got Answers

Will I get money back if my policy is terminated?

CIGA may reimburse you for any unearned premium, money you paid your insurance company for premiums that will no longer be available for coverage.

For example, if you paid a 12-month premium and the policy is cancelled due to liquidation 3 months later, you may be entitled to 9 months of refunded premium.

Will my benefits be delayed?

Since CIGA must first obtain the claim files from the Liquidator of the insolvent insurer, some delays may occur. Rest assured, we make every effort to quickly identify and expedite the handling of all claims.

What happens to my in-force policy after the liquidation order?

Generally, a liquidation order and finding of insolvency will terminate an in-force policy at expiration date or 30-days after the liquidation order, whichever is sooner. It is incumbent on you to secure a replacement policy. We suggest contacting your insurance agent/broker to find new insurance coverage as soon as possible.
