California Independent Grocers Mourn Loss of Former CEO

Sacramento, California - Frank Moffett, retired President/CEO of the California Independent Grocers Association (CIGA), passed away in Placerville, California on Saturday, November 17, 2007. He was less than a month shy of his 80th birthday. Frank began his employment with CIGA—known then as the Northern California Grocers Association—in August, 1978 as a field representative. In 1985, he became the association's Government Relations Director/Lobbyist. In 1991 Frank moved into the position of President/CEO, a position he maintained until he reached his postponed retirement date of April 30, 1994.

Born on December 13, 1927, he was named Francis Earl Moffett after both of his grandfathers, but was better known by friends and family as Frank. The oldest of three siblings, Frank is survived by his brother Hubert and his sister Judy. He was married to his high school sweetheart Evelyn for 59 years and is survived by daughter Carol Mettale, son David Moffett, and his grandchildren.

Frank served his country in World War II in the Army. He went on to graduate from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in sales/marketing. He began his working career in sales as Owner/Partner of a supply store; then in 1957 he went to work for Save Mart Stores of Modesto and thus began his long career with the grocery industry. After his retirement in 1994, Frank enjoyed fishing and camping. Known as an "impish prankster," he was loved by all who knew him.

"Frank left quite a legacy here at CIGA," says Sharon Paxton, CIGA Executive Director.. "He had a keen understanding of the issues independent grocers face and his leadership was crucial to the development of our association. Even today, CIGA members often speak of him with great adoration. Above all, he'll be missed for his warmth, his friendliness, and his good-natured humor."

Headquartered in Sacramento, California, CIGA continues to represent the Independent Retail Food Industry since the late 1800's. Today, more than 800 independent grocers and supplier companies make up its membership. CIGA's vision is to be the best possible association by promoting, supporting, educating, protecting and fulfilling the needs of the independent grocer.
